HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $ 1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

LG will use the operating software, used in now-defunct Palm smartphones years ago, for its “smart” or Internet-connected TVs. The Asian electronics company had worked with HP on WebOS before offering to buy it outright.

Under the terms of their agreement, LG acquires the operating software’s source code, associated documentation, engineering talent, various associated websites, and licenses under HP’s intellectual property including patents covering fundamental operating system and user interface technology.

HP will retain the patents and all the technology relating to the cloud service of webOS, HP Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte said in an interview.

“As we looked at it, we saw a very compelling IP that was very unique in the marketplace,” he said, adding that HP has already had a partnership with LG on webOS before the deal was announced.

“As a result of this collaboration, LG offered to acquire the webOS operating system technology,” Veghte said.

Skott Ahn, President and CTO, LG Electronics, said the company will incorporate the operating system in the Smart TV line-up first “and then hopefully all the other devices in the future.”

Both companies declined to reveal the terms of the deal.

LG will keep the WebOS team in Silicon Valley and, for now, will continue to be based out of HP offices, Ahn said.

HP opened its webOS mobile operating system to developers and companies in 2012 after trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, one of the pioneers of the smartphone industry.

The company had tried to build products based on webOS with the now-defunct TouchPad tablet its flagship product.

HP launched and discontinued the TouchPad in 2010, a little over a month after it hit store shelves with costly fanfare after it saw poor demand for a tablet priced on par with Apple’s dominant iPad.

WebOS is widely viewed as a strong mobile platform, but has been assailed for its paucity of applications, an important consideration while choosing a mobile device.

Tegra 4 performance crushes current-gen processors

NVIDIA’s (NVDA) next-generation processors won’t be available in devices until later this year, however early benchmarks have revealed that the new chipset will be worth the wait. Engadget ran a variety of benchmark tests on one of the company’s Tegra 4 reference tablets and was left with scores that in some cases nearly quadrupled the performance of older Tegra 3 devices.

Tegra 4 Quadrant scores topped out at 16,436 and AnTuTu benchmarks reached over 36,000, both of which more than tripled the performance from comparable Tegra 3 tablets. Perhaps the most impressive result was the 499ms score from the SunSpider test. The Tegra 4 benchmark, which measures web browsing performance, nearly halved Apple’s iPad 4 score of 865ms.

NVIDIA and its partners are scheduled to debut Tegra 4 in smartphones, tablets and the company’s Project Shield gaming device in July.

Firefox takes on smartphone powers Apple, Google

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Mozilla, makers of the popular Firefox Internet browser, is preparing to challenge Google and Apple‘s grip on smartphone software.

A new Firefox operating system for mobile devices is set for a July release after winning the backing of 13 wireless service providers around the globe, including Spain’s Telefonica, China Unicom and America Movil.

Mozilla is betting there’s room for a software developer-friendly mobile platform alongside Apple’s and Google’s Android, which together power the majority of mobile devices on the planet.

The new software is based on open Web standards and is capable of operating on devices with much lower hardware requirements than today’s existing crop of smarpthones, according to Mozilla.

Because the Firefox OS is open-source and Web-based, third-party developers will be free to sell mobile applications without needing to share revenue with Apple or Google.

“There’s a strategic imperative for the industry to have another OS that really is open and supports choice and competition,” said Mozilla’s Senior Vice President of Products, Jay Sullivan.

Mozilla will showcase some of the first hardware devices based on that software at the Mobile World Congress, taking place in Barcelona this week. Among the brands that have signed on to make devices based on Firefox OS are South Korea’s LG, China’s ZTE and Huawei.

Unlike Google and Apple’s operating systems, which are built from proprietary technology, Firefox OS uses the HTML5 standard that Web services are built with. That means anyone familiar with Web programming can create Firefox OS apps.

Whether a smartphone built on Web standards can deliver the kind of performance that consumers expect remains to be seen. Facebook famously stopped using HTML5 to develop its iPhone app last year, with Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg saying the technology couldn’t deliver acceptable quality and calling a decision to use HTML5 for its app one of Facebook’s “biggest mistakes.”

SIZE MATTERS

Mozilla, a non-profit organization, also faces stiff competition. Google’s Android software, which the company distributes free to phone vendors from Samsung to HTC, had roughly 70 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market in the fourth quarter, according to industry research firm Gartner. Apple, which created the smartphone market with the 2007 launch of the now-iconic iPhone, had a roughly 21 percent share of the market.

“The real barrier here is not necessarily a technical one, it’s scale,” said John Jackson, an analyst with research firm IDC. Mozilla will need to attract large numbers of consumers and app developers if it hopes to avoid the fate of previous mobile operating system hopefuls, such as Palm’s WebOS, now owned by Hewllet-Packard.

But “the world’s computing experiences are going mobile and when they get to the mobile environment, they’re happening on a platform that’s controlled by either Apple or Google,” said Jackson. “There’s a universe of content and service providers that have an interest in seeing a more neutral platform materialize.”

Mozilla will initially look to compete in so-called “emerging economies” in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, where many people still use older phone models and have yet to upgrade to more expensive smartphones that feature touchscreens and high-speed Internet connections.

The first phones will be available this summer in Brazil, Columbia, Poland, Venezuela, Serbia and Spain.

The first Firefox OS phones that Telefonica will offer this summer come with a wholesale price of $ 100. The price that consumers pay for the phone will vary in different markets and depend on whether the phone is offered on a pre-paid basis or comes with a service contract, a Telefonica spokesman said.

Telefonica will eventually offer higher-end Firefox OS phones, and plans to offer Firefox devices in all 25 countries that it operates in by the end of 2014.

Samsung takes on iPad Mini with Galaxy Note 8.0

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Samsung Electronics is beefing up its tablet range with a competitor to Apple‘s iPad Mini that sports a pen for writing on the screen.

The Korean company announced on Sunday in B’arcelona that the Galaxy Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch screen, putting it very close in size to the Apple‘s tablet, which launched in November with a 7.9-inch screen. It’s not the first time Samsung has made a tablet that’s in the Mini’s size range: it’s very first iPad competitor had a 7-inch screen, and it still makes a tablet of that size, but without a pen.

Samsung will start selling the new tablet in the April to June period, at an as yet undetermined price. It made the announcement ahead of Mobile World Congress, the wireless industry’s annual trade show, which starts Monday in Barcelona, Spain.

The Note 8.0 fills a gap in Samsung’s line-up of pen-equipped devices between the Galaxy Note II smartphone, with its 5.5-inch screen, and the Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-size tablet. Samsung has made the pen, or more properly the stylus, one of the tools it uses to chip away at Apple’s dominance in both tablets and high-end smartphones. Apple doesn’t make any devices that work with styluses, preferring to optimize its interfaces for fingers, mice and touchpads.

On Samsung’s Note line, the pens can be used to write, highlight and draw. The screens also sense when the mouse hovers over the screen, providing an equivalent to the hovering mouse cursor on the PC. However, few third-party applications have been modified to take full advantage of the pens.

Microsoft says small number of its computers hacked

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp said on Friday a small number of its computers, including some in its Mac software business unit, were infected with malware, but there was no evidence of customer data being affected and it is continuing its investigation.

The world’s largest software company said the security intrusion was “similar” to recent ones reported by Apple Inc and Facebook Inc.

The incident, reported on one of the company’s public blogs happened “recently”, but Microsoft said it chose not to make any statement publicly while it gathered information about the attack.

“This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries,” said Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Trustworthy Computing Security at Microsoft, in the company’s blog post.

Over the past week or so, both Apple and Facebook said computers used by employees were attacked after visiting a software developer website infected with malicious software.

The attacks come at a time of broader concern about computer security.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have been infiltrated recently. Earlier this month U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country’s critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

Sony shows PlayStation 4 capabilities, but no box

NEW YORK (AP) — Sony wants you to know that the PlayStation 4 is coming this holiday season, but not what it will look like.

The Japanese electronics giant talked about its upcoming console for the first time Wednesday and showed what it can do, without actually revealing the device itself during the two-hour event. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage.

“I don’t know that the box is going to be something that’s going to have a dramatic impact on people’s feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles,” said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

“There’s a big story to tell here, and it’s going to take between now and the holiday season to get all the details out there,” Tretton said in an interview.

Tretton said the price of the PS4 hasn’t been decided yet, but hinted that it wouldn’t be as high as the PlayStation 3 was initially. The PS3 debuted in 2006 with two models for $ 500 and $ 600. It now sells for about $ 300.

The PS4 will be jostling for attention this holiday season with Microsoft’s successor to the Xbox. Details on that device are expected in June. Xbox 360 came out a year before PS3 and has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. Having an event this early allows Sony to grab the spotlight for a few months, though the lack of an actual device was noted by many people on Twitter and elsewhere.

Sony did reveal that the insides of the PS4 will essentially be a “supercharged PC,” much like an Xbox. That’s a big departure from the old and idiosyncratic PlayStation design and should make it easier for developers to create games. Sony Corp. is using processing chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

“One of the big challenges we faced in the past was that we created great technology that we handed over to the development community, and they had to go through a learning curve before they could harness it. And when they did, we saw some phenomenal games,” Tretton said. “We wanted to lower that barrier of entry and really give them the ability to create tremendous gaming experiences from Day One.”

The adoption of PC chips also means that the new console won’t be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet.

Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends can “look over your shoulder virtually,” said David Perry, co-founder of the Sony-owned Internet game company Gaikai. With remote play, you can run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony’s mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, which debuted last year.

The goal is to make the PS4 so good at figuring out what games and other content you want that it can download it without being asked, so that it’s available when you realize you do want it, Sony said.

“Our long-term vision is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero,” said Mark Cerny, Sony’s lead system architect on the PS4.

The PS4 is arriving amid declines in video game hardware, software and accessory sales. Research firm NPD Group said game sales fell 22 percent to $ 13.3 billion in 2012. With the launch of the PS4, Sony is looking to attract people who may have shifted their attention to games on Facebook, tablet computers and mobile phones.

Forrester analyst James McQuivey said Sony is missing the point by building what amounts to an upgraded PS3.

“Sony believes the future will be like the past and has built the game console to prove it,” he said. “Tablets and smartphones now engage more people in more minutes of gaming than consoles will ever achieve.”

Sony showed an updated controller that adds a touchpad and a “share” button. The controller also features a light bar, which means a new PlayStation camera can more easily track the device for motion control.

The bulk of Wednesday’s event was devoted to demos of games for the PS4, including a realistic team racing simulator, “Drive Club,” super-powered action sequel “Infamous: Second Son,” artsy puzzler “The Witness” and several first-person shooter games, including “Killzone: Shadow Fall.” Beyond games, the PS4 will let people create animation in 3-D using a Move motion controller — all in real time.

Last fall, Nintendo launched the next generation of gaming consoles with the Wii U, which comes with a tablet-like controller called the GamePad. The controller allows two people playing the same game to have different experiences depending on whether they use the GamePad or a traditional Wii remote, which itself was revolutionary when it came out because of its motion-control features.

Judging by Wednesday’s event, Sony seeks to improve but not revolutionize game play. The games were updates to existing ones, with improved graphics.

“At the end of the day, this is a device by gamers for gamers,” Tretton said. “The games that people go out and spend billions of dollars on are your traditional shooters.”

The original Wii has sold more units since its launch than both its rivals, but it has lost momentum in recent years as the novelty of its motion controller faded. Nintendo said it sold 3.1 million Wii Us by the end of 2012. It was a disappointing start for the first of a new generation of gaming systems.

In some ways, notably its ability to display high-definition games, the Wii U was just catching up to the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the preferred consoles to play popular games such as “Call of Duty.”

All three console makers are trying to position their devices as entertainment hubs that can deliver movies, music and social networking as they try to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablets. The PlayStation online network will have access to Sony’s video and music services, as well as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, with paid subscriptions to those services. People will also be able to access Facebook.

The U.S. Postal Service Is Getting into the ‘Wearable Electronics’ Business?

Yes, you read that headline right. Strapped for cash and obviously desperate, the United States Postal Service is launching a new line of “‘smart apparel,’ — also known as wearable electronics.” The mailmen-turned-fashionistas will call the new line Rain Heat & Snow, first for men and later for women, and while it’s unclear exactly how smart the apparel gets, reports suggest that you’ll  be able to plug your iPod into your new Postal Service jacket. The agency’s licensing manager, Steven Mills, says that the new line “will put the Postal Service on the cutting edge of functional fashion.” Which is basically true. When was the last time you plugged your iPod into your jacket? That said, when was the last time you used an iPod? Or the U.S. Postal Service?

It’s hard to not to give the old USPS a slow clap for this one. It would be one thing if the Postal Service wanted to sell some t-shirts and Dad ties with pictures of stamps on them — they actually tried that back in the 80s, and it didn’t work — but it sounds like they’re actually going after serious outerwear brands like North Face and Burton Snowboards with this one. It’s unclear if the Postal Service can keep up, though. Burton, for one, has a head start, since it partnered with Motorola and released a Bluetooth-enabled snowboarding jacket with a matching, headphone studded beanie back in 2005. The geeks at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) loved it, called it “space age.” The Postal Service, by contrast, opted not to take the fancy brand-name strategy, instead teaming up with the Cleveland-based Wahconah Group. You might know them from their Legends line of men’s clothing, but you probably don’t.

RELATED: The U.S. Postal Service Lost $ 3.3 Billion Last Quarter

The big question remains: Will it work? The Postal Service lost $ 16 billion last year and plans to halt Saturday mail service in an attempt to cut costs and dig itself out of debt. Unfortunately, the drastic measure will cut 22,000 jobs, but it will only save the agency $ 2 billion a year. Suffice it to say that the Postal Service needed to get creative with their revenue streams — and you can’t get much more creative than cyborg jackets. After all, the new ad campaign last year didn’t work, and the Simpson’s stamp venture definitely didn’t work. So why not get into the outdoor gear business? If anybody knows anything about being outside, it’s those letter carriers, right? You know the riff: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Here’s a little bit of encouraging news. Other companies have tried the apparel route in the past, albeit without the whole sexy wearable electronics angle. Apple released its own clothing line in 1986, and look at where the company is now!

Pirate Bay reports anti-piracy group to Finnish police for alleged copyright infringement

Give the Pirate Bay this much — they certainly have a refined sense of irony. TorrentFreak reports that the Pirate Bay has asked the Economic Crime division of Finland’s police department to investigate an anti-piracy organization for allegedly copying several of the Pirate Bay’s design aspects for its own website. According to TorrentFreak, the Pirate Bay is upset that the Copyright Information and Anti-Piracy Centre (CIAPC) has allegedly “copied the site’s homepage and the CSS file,” which “is a direct violation of The Pirate Bay’s usage policy which specifically prohibits organizations’ use of any site material without permission.” And yes, for those wondering, the Pirate Bay does understand the irony of what it’s doing.

[More from BGR: Broadband ISPs put to the test: Real data speeds vs. advertised speeds charted by FCC]

“While The Pirate Bay may have a positive view on copying, it will not stand by and watch copyright enforcing organizations disrespect copyright,” writes Pirate Bay blogger Winston. “CIAPC is like an ugly high school bully without friends. It’s time to take a stand. Cyber bullying is a serious matter to us all.”

[More from BGR: We’ll be live from HTC’s press conference tomorrow at 10:00AM!]

For those who don’t recall, CIAPC last year took some heat for pushing Finnish police to raid the home of a 9-year-old Pirate Bay user and seize her “Winnie the Poor” laptop. CIAPC eventually decided to drop charges against the girl and her father, who had allegedly ignored the organization’s request to pay a €600 fine to settle copyright violations.

Intel Israel more than doubles exports, mulls new investment

TEL AVIV (Reuters) – Intel‘s Israeli subsidiary more than doubled its exports in 2012 to $ 4.6 billion and is seeking to bring manufacturing of the company’s next generation of chips to Israel.

Intel’s exports, which rose 109 percent from $ 2.2 billion in 2011, were boosted by the start of production of chips using 22 nanometer technology at its Kiryat Gat plant in southern Israel, which is now operating at full capacity.

Intel, the world’s No. 1 chipmaker, will build chips over the next two to three years with features measuring just 14 nm in Ireland and the United States but the company is already thinking about where it will produce 10 nm chips. The narrower the features, the more transistors can fit on a single chip, improving performance.

Intel Israel executives said they would like to see 10 nm production in Israel.

“The average life of a technology is two to six years so we need to be busy to get the next technology, 10 nanometer,” Maxine Fassberg, general manager of Intel Israel, told a news conference on Sunday. “We need to get a decision far enough in advance to be able to upgrade the plant. So for 10 nanometer, decisions will need to be made this year.”

Fassberg said upgrading the existing Fab 28 plant in Israel would require a lower investment than building a new plant but would still involve several billion dollars.

Intel Israel has in the past received government grants to help with the costs of its investments and Fassberg told Reuters the company was “constantly in talks with the government”.

Intel has invested $ 10.5 billion in Israel in the past decade, including $ 1.1 billion in 2012, and has received $ 1.3 billion in government grants.

The company accounted for 20 percent of Israel’s high-tech exports last year and 10 percent of its industrial exports, excluding diamonds.

“If Intel had not increased its exports, Israel’s high-tech exports would have shrunk by 10 percent,” Intel Israel President Mooly Eden said.

Most of Intel Israel’s exports – $ 3.5 billion – came from its chip manufacturing activities.

Intel is Israel’s largest private employer, with 8,542 workers, up 10 percent from 2011. The company has two plants – in Jerusalem and Kiryat Gat – as well as four research and development centers.

Eden said Intel was also committed to investing in start-ups, having invested in 64 Israeli companies since 1996. In July its global investment arm Intel Capital said it would expand its operations in Israel.

NBA star Kobe Bryant comes to China’s social media

BEIJING (AP) — Kobe Bryant has stirred plenty of excitement by joining a Chinese-language microblogging site.

His first message came Friday morning Beijing time, about an hour and a half before Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers were due to play the Clippers.

“Valentine’s day sneaks ready to break Clippers hearts. Big game tonight,” the first message on his account said.

Sina Weibo verified that the NBA superstar has set up an individual account on its hugely popular microblogging site. Bryant’s followers numbered more than 100,000 within hours on Thursday, and by Friday they had surpassed 200,000.

The account came just a few days after a message appeared on Nike Basketball‘s Sina Weibo account, named Black Mamba, on Lunar New Year’s Day: “Hey it’s Kobe, I’ve decided to take over Nike basketball’s Weibo handle for a few days and I wanted to wish you all a Happy New Year.”

Bryant is widely known and extremely popular in China, rivaling hometown star Yao Ming. During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, billboards of Bryant dominated China’s commercial districts.

The Los Angeles Lakers star has several fan pages on Sina Weibo.

One of them — “Home of Kobe” — has more than 200,000 followers. Along with other sites, it posted a welcome message for Bryant. By Friday, it was translating fans’ comments into English.

“Hello, Black Mamba, welcome to SINA WEIBO. It’s been a long time for Chinese fans to wait for this moment,” the page wrote.

Sina Weibo says it has more than 400 million users.

Facebook stock slides after analysts’ downgrades

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Facebook Inc. fell Tuesday after two analysts downgraded the stock amid concerns about the company’s ability to grow ad revenue quickly enough, especially on mobile devices.

THE SPARK: Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner said that while Facebook’s advertising business still presents “significant untapped” opportunities, mobile ad revenue in the most recent quarter didn’t grow as fast as he’d expected. He cut his rating on the world’s largest online social network to “Market-Perform” from “Outperform” and lowered his target price to $ 27 from $ 33.

BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield, meanwhile, downgraded the stock to “Sell” from “Neutral.” He has a target price of $ 22.

ANALYST COMMENT: “Facebook management continues to focus investors on the increased ‘engagement’ with Facebook, as consumers shift from desktop usage to mobile usage,” Greenfield wrote in a note to investors.

That means people end up “touching” Facebook far more as they move to mobile use, since the Facebook app sends many of them notifications when their friends respond to their posts or for other reasons.

“Yet, the question Facebook has yet to answer is how mobile is affecting aggregate engagement, meaning total time spent on a monthly basis,” Greenfield added. “We suspect the more consumers shift to mobile, the less total time they are spending with Facebook.”

Facebook declined to comment. The company says it does not comment on stock price movements or analyst reports.

STOCK MOVEMENT: Facebook shares fell 89 cents, or 3.2 percent, to close at $ 27.37. The stock has lost close to 12 percent so far this month after enjoying an upswing since last October. Facebook went public at $ 38 last May and has not hit that price since.

Tweet-to-buy? American Express says yes

NEW YORK (AP) — A new program from American Express lets Twitter users post special hashtags to buy gift cards and things like Xbox 360 gaming consoles or a Kindle Fire HD from Amazon.

The credit card issuer said Monday that holders of eligible American Express cards will first have to link their cards with their Twitter accounts. Then they can tweet special hashtags, such as “BuyAmexGiftCard25,” wait for a confirmation from Amex and re-tweet the confirmation within 15 minutes to make the purchase. The extra step is there to help make sure that people don’t accidentally buy things with one Tweet.

Once the tweet is sent, the products are sent to the cardholder’s billing address, the company said.

On the safety front, American Express said people’s credit card information is not shared with Twitter or merchants, so even if hackers gain access to someone’s Twitter account they won’t be able to get their credit card information.

Leslie Berland, senior vice president of digital partnerships and development at the American Express, said the company has been “going very deep into social commerce” over the past couple of years. But past efforts have focused on discount offers, not actual purchases through Twitter.

Amex customers can buy gift cards starting Monday and other items beginning on Wednesday.
